What Does East Penn’s Reserve Power UL1973 Certification Mean for You?

A few weeks ago, East Penn announced their complete Reserve Power battery offerings had been certified to UL1973. This made the company the first with lead battery manufacturing in the U.S.A. to be certified to this safety standard for its entire line of Telecommunication, UPS, Utilities and Railway products, including Deka’s: Unigy I, Unigy II, 12-volt and 2-volt Fahrenheit, HR, HRC and CTC products.

The current landscape of energy storage and power system regulations are rapidly evolving every day. Certification to UL1973 streamlines qualification for system integrators and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) who need to confirm adherence to stationary system integration certifications like UL9540 and National Fire Protection standards like NFPA855. Also, under the NFPA855 2023 standard, UL1973 certified batteries are allowed to be grouped in 250kWh configurations. That is 5 times more than non-certified product, which is limited to 50kWh units that also require three feet of spacing on all sides. This certification allows Deka’s batteries to be safely installed closer together. Think of locations gridlocked for space, places like New York City, every inch matters in buildings and skyscrapers. With UL 1973 certified Deka product you have the advantage to make your system fit in close dimensions compared to non-certified products. Saving space turns into saving real dollars. This certification also provides you the peace of mind that your datacenter is protected by batteries thoroughly tested and proven to be a safe product.

Additionally, East Penn is always looking for ways to test and prove product safety. In a separate test initiated by East Penn, not needed for UL 1973 lead battery certification but part of UL 1973 standard, a Deka Fahrenheit battery was tasked with withstanding the External Fire Exposure Test. During this procedure, the battery is subjected to an open flame (at a minimum temperature of 590°C (1094°F) for 20 minutes. Under these conditions the battery performed as designed, with no continuation of fire once flame was removed and no other negative effects.

East Penn is always at the forefront at battery innovation and safety for its customers. These tests and certification validate the safe power supply of lead batteries which we are proud to manufacture every day.
