East Penn Manufacturing Co., Inc. is proud to be recognized by the Pennsylvania Environmental Council as a recipient of the 2013 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. These awards highlight the best in environmental innovation and expertise throughout the Commonwealth. This honor was given to East Penn for the Company’s advanced battery energy storage system demonstration, located on its large Lyon Station, PA manufacturing complex.
The project is currently providing ancillary services to the Pennsylvania-Jersey-Maryland (PJM) Interconnection, the largest Regional Transmission Organization/Independent System Operator in the U.S. It is the second project to belaunched out of 16 energy storage projects selected by the Department of Energy underits Smart Grid Storage Demonstration Program under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) 2009.
This advanced battery system, integrated through East Penn’s subsidiary Ecoult, will help offset the need of fossil fuel powered, grid scale energy generation stations that have negative environmental impacts and are less efficient. It will also lower cost provision of frequency regulation and demand management service through an increased efficiency in grid operations. The system is powered by the ground-breaking Deka® UltraBattery® technology manufactured on-site.
Sally Miksiewicz, East Penn CEO, said: “We are extremely honored to be a recipient of this award. This project clearly demonstrates the ability of UltraBattery® technology, integrated with Ecoult’s complete energy storage solution, to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the electrical grid. As we embrace the utilization of advanced energy storage systems and its role in helping to conserve energy, we will make significant strides toward managing energy in a cleaner, more efficient way.”
